Abu Ali is a Palestinian refugee who has a ceramic workshop in the camp of Aqabat Jebar, just south of Jericho. Here, he collects, legivates, stores, and prepares clay. He throws and fires household vessels, and exports them for sale in local markets.
Abu Ali is a friendly soul who works hard everyday but is quick to smile or stop to share coffee. His shop provides for his extended family. The family, in turn, all help in the shop.
There are approximately 6,000 Palestinian refugees who live in this compact desert camp. Fresh water is often a problem, complicating the work of ceramic production.
In this image he attaches necks to jar bodies. Each are thrown separately. His grandson is at his elbow.
