The Grand Old Man of Israeli Archaeology

Avraham Biran (1909-2008) was, in his own words, "the luckiest archaeologist that ever lived." His amazing finds at Tel Dan (Tell el-Qadi) bear this out. In addition to being a fine archaeologist, he was able communicator who knew how to spin a good story. Here he is in his element, talking about the Bible and archaeology at one of the gates at Tell Dan.

I shot this during the 1989 field season.
