How others see me
I am often called Khouri in Arabic speaking contexts, even though I am not a "priest." I do pastor within the faith community of the evangelical movement.
In 2014 I received the appointment of Professor of Old Testament at Johnson University after more than 20 years of service at Cincinnati Christian University. In January of 2018 I began a new role at Johnson as Dean of the School of Bible and Theology.
Concurrently, I serve as an Adjunct Professor with the Jerusalem Center of Biblical Studies, Jerusalem. I teach in Israel-Palestine under their auspices.
I have degrees from Ozark Christian College, Cincinnati Christian University, Hebrew Union College, and Andrews University. My Ph.D. dissertation focused on the collection of Early Bronze Age ceramics excavated from the site of Tell Taannek, Palestine.
Publications include The College Press NIV Commentary: Joshua (2008), The College Press NIV Commentary: Ruth (2008) and My Father’s World: Celebrating the Life of Reuben G. Bullard (2011). Other articles, reviews, and contributing chapters have appeared in volumes such as Eerdman’s Dictionary of the Bible (2000), A Humble Defense (2004). Taanach/Tell Taannek. 100 Jahre Forschungen zur Archaologie, zur Geschichte, zu den Fundobjekten und zu den Keilschrifttexten (2006),The Eerdman’s Companion to the Bible (2011), Devotions on the Hebrew Bible (2015), Dictionary of Daily Life in Biblical and PostBiblical Antiquity (2015) and The Dictionary of the Bible in Ancient Media (2017).
I am a member of several professional organizations including the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), the Near East Archaeological Society (NEAS), and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). I am a Fellow with the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR).
Honors and awards include the Julius and Hildegard Lewy Fellowship (Hebrew Union College), Rabbis Kahn-Schachtel Fellowship (Hebrew Union College), Research Fellow (Albright Institute of Archaeological Research) Endowment for Biblical Research Summer Travel Grant (American Schools of Oriental Research), Educational and Cultural Affairs Fellow (Albright Institute of Archaeological Research), and Teacher of the Year (Cincinnati Christian University).
Certified outdoor skills include PADI Open Water Diver (2000), PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (2000), PADI Enriched Air Diver (2010), and NOLS Wilderness First Aid (2016).
The love of my life is Vicki. Together we read, write, hike, swim, and enjoy not shoveling snow. We have two grown children, Tanner and Moriah.
