Toyota Land Cruiser

That Nikon is a Cannon

Les Riley captured this view to two of our team members on African safari. That’s Gary Weisenberger firing from the stern position with a rather large-caliber lens. I’m curious what Gary sees in the viewfinder. It’s sure to be Serengeti-sized, whatever it is!

A Big Rig Built for Big Game Watching

Sometimes you can't stay in your seat. The good news is, you don't have to. The top pops up!

Most safari rigs in Tanzania are specialized conversions of Toyota Land Cruisers. These are customized in-country for rugged terrain, high-volume tourism, and optimal wildlife viewing.

Beyond the Horizon: Joining the Great Migration in 2026

A Land Cruiser rumbles across the Serengeti, Tanzania.

The Greatest Show on Earth: Join Us in 2026

While our 2025 African safaris have officially reached capacity, I am delighted to announce a brand-new adventure for those ready to witness the wild in its most raw, magnificent state. In February 2026, we are heading to the Southern Circuit to experience the Great Migration—the largest movement of land animals on the planet.

February is a singular moment in the Serengeti. As the herds gather on the nutrient-rich southern plains, the Calving Season begins. Witnessing hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras gathered on the horizon is an experience that stays with you forever. It is a time of incredible vulnerability and high-octane predator action—a true masterclass in the circle of life.

Will you join the journey?

  • When: February 2026

  • Where: Southern Serengeti & Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania

  • Focus: The Great Migration Calving Season & Big Cat sightings

Secure your spot for 2026 before this expedition fills up as well!

An Archaeologist's Rig (Part 17)

I came across this vintage Toyota Land Cruiser (FJ-40 series) in the AlUla Oasis in northern Saudi Arabia. If I could just get this sweet rig in my suitcase, I would surprise Vicki!

My daughter has an eye for such machines. Check out these sweet Landys she found in Germany. Follow the link here.

The sign at the entrance read “Home of Tree Climbing Lions.”

I thought it best to keep one eye skyward at all times. Having 400 pounds of tooth and claw fall on your head would be terrible surprise. It also would make an end to a lovely safari that Vicki and I and Mr Nixon had planned in the East African country of Tanzania.

The three of us were sitting at a table, poolside at Ilboru Safari Lodge. Mr Saif had come to review our itinerary, introduce us to our driver, and, of course, carry the news that Vicki would not be molding in her clothes.
