“The Colossi of Memnon,” photographed in the year 1900.
The Sorta-Silent Sentinels
Standing 18 meters tall, the Colossi of Memnon have guarded the West Bank of the Nile for over 3,400 years. These massive quartzite statues are the lone survivors of Amenhotep III’s mortuary temple, once the largest religious complex in ancient Egypt. While they stand mostly silent today, they became legendary in the Roman era for producing mysterious sounds at dawn.
