The Roots of the Coptic Church

Coptic Christianity traces its roots back to the 1st century, when the Apostle Mark is said to have brought the Gospel to Egypt. Today, the Coptic Orthodox Church remains one of the world’s oldest Christian denominations, preserving unique traditions and a deep sense of identity shaped by centuries of history.

The Church of Abu Serga: A Living Monument

At the heart of this heritage in Old Cairo sits the Church of Abu Serga (Saints Sergius and Bacchus). Built in the 4th or 5th century, it is most famous for being constructed over a subterranean cave where the Holy Family reportedly found shelter during their flight into Egypt. With its ancient basilica architecture and “Noah’s Ark” timber roof, Abu Serga serves as a living bridge between biblical narrative and modern devotion.
