July in the biblical Heartland isn't for the faint of heart. The lush greens of spring have long since surrendered to the sun, leaving behind a landscape that is brittle-brown, beautifully stark, and coated in a fine layer of dust. It’s a place where the history feels as baked into the earth as the soil itself.
The Golden-Brown Wilderness
Walking through the hills this time of year, you realize why so much of the biblical imagery focuses on water and shade. Everything crackles underfoot. The “land of milk and honey” takes on a different character in the summer—it’s a season of endurance and stillness. Yet, there is a rugged majesty in the way the light hits the scorched slopes at golden hour, turning the thirsty terrain into something ethereal.
Behind the Wheel (Almost)
I’ll admit, spending many hours in the tour buses that navigate these winding roads, I had a momentary lapse in judgment. I thought, How hard could it be? But as it turns out, “they” have a very strict policy about letting enthusiastic wannabes take the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle. Probably for the best—the Heartland's hairpin turns are best left to the professionals while I stick to the storytelling.
A Shoutout to the Crew
This journey wouldn't be nearly as vivid without the people behind the scenes. A huge thanks to Mani Tatan for capturing the shot. And, of course, a massive thank you to Rami—your patience while I tried to “help” with the bus is truly legendary.
Mark at the wheel.
