Jesus in Exile: The Holy Family Trail

Egypt’s place in the story of Jesus

The “Holy Family Trail” is a sprawling pilgrim route that, according to Coptic Church tradition, marks the exact path Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus took to escape King Herod. Spanning hundreds of miles from the Sinai Peninsula through the Nile Delta and into Upper Egypt, the trail links dozens of ancient sites—from the crypt of Abu Serga to the monasteries of Wadi El Natrun.

While these locations have been centers of devotion for nearly two millennia, the trail sits at the intersection of deep faith and historical mystery. There are no contemporary Roman or Jewish records to verify the specific geography of their flight, leaving the route to be defined by local oral traditions and the visions of later church fathers.

Whether viewed as a verifiable historical map or a symbolic “Redemptive Replay” of the Exodus, the trail remains a powerful testament to Egypt’s enduring role as a place of refuge.
