Go underground in Alexandria, Egypt
Beneath the bustling streets of Alexandria lies one of the most bizarre and beautiful archaeological sites in the world: the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa.
Forgotten for centuries until a donkey reportedly stumbled into a shaft in 1900, this multi-level necropolis is a true “cultural mashup.” Here, the rigid traditions of Ancient Egypt collide with the artistic flair of Greece and Rome. You’ll see Egyptian gods dressed in Roman legionnaire armor and traditional tomb carvings with a distinctly Hellenistic twist.
It’s a hauntingly unique subterranean world where three great civilizations meet to honor the dead.
