Persian Arrival in Greece: The Other, Older Gulf War

The other Gulf War

In 490 BC, the first Persian invasion of Greece reached its climax at the Battle of Marathon, where the Persian fleet anchored in the Gulf of Petalioi. This strategic waterway, located between the eastern coast of Attica and the island of Euboea, served as the staging ground for the Persian forces under Datis and Artaphernes. The conflict is sometimes colloquially referred to as “the other Gulf War” to draw a historical parallel between the ancient Persian Gulf power's invasion and modern conflicts in the same region.
