Mount Meru: Confronting an African Volcano

The air is crisp, the gear is prepped, and the goal is clear: Mount Meru. Rising 14,980 feet above the city, this dormant volcano is more than just a “warm-up” for Kilimanjaro—it’s a world-class challenge with some of the most dramatic crater views in Africa.

Before we hit the trail, there's the ritual of the “final pack”—checking boots, testing headlamps, and fueling up for the ascent. The journey from the bustling streets of Arusha to the silent, jagged peaks of the Socialist Peak begins right here.

Once we clear the treeline and the need for an armed ranger, there will be no team; its me and Peter, an incredible mountain guide.
