New Life in the Serengeti: Witnessing a Thomson’s Gazelle’s First Steps

Welcome to the World: New Life in the Serengeti

It’s birthing season in the Serengeti, and we just witnessed one of nature's most tender beginnings. We watched a tiny Thomson’s Gazelle take his very first wobbly steps, guided gently by his mother as she nosed him toward safety. He still needs a little cleaning up, but he’s officially joined the herd!

While these fawns are remarkable—capable of running within just hours of birth—they spend their first week or two as “hiders.” To elude predators, they remain almost entirely motionless in the tall grass, rising only when it’s time to nurse.

It’s a fragile, beautiful start to life in the wild.
