Small village; massive legacy
The modern village of Olympia, officially known as Archaia Olympia, is a small, quiet town in the western Peloponnese that serves as the primary gateway to the adjacent Archaeological Site of Olympia. Nestled in a lush valley at the confluence of the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers, the village features traditional architecture, tree-lined squares, and numerous hotels and tavernas catering to the hundreds of thousands of visitors who arrive each year. Beyond its role in tourism, the village remains a powerful global landmark where the Olympic flame is still lit at the Temple of Hera before beginning its journey to the host city of the modern Games.
