Indian Ocean Trade Networks in the New Testament World

The “First Great Upswing”

Between 300 BC and AD 300, the Indian Ocean was not a barrier but a bridge, hosting a sophisticated network of maritime trading zones that linked East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Far East. This first developed era of global exchange on the Indian Ocean saw luxury goods like African ivory, rhinoceros horn, and tortoise shell flow toward the markets of Rome and China, while spices and silks traveled in the opposite direction.
