The Birthplace of the Modern Olympic Games

The Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens is the only major stadium in the world constructed entirely of white Pentelic marble. Originally built in the 4th century BC for the Panathenaic Games, it was later refurbished to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Today, the stadium remains an active cultural landmark, serving as the finishing point for the annual Athens Marathon and the site of the Olympic flame handover ceremony.
