The Unusual location
The historic wedding of Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre took place in 1191 at the Chapel of St. George within the towering Limassol Castle on the island of Cyprus. This rare royal ceremony outside of Europe proper occurred after Richard conquered the island during the Third Crusade, marking the only time an English Queen has been crowned on foreign soil. Today, the castle stands as a powerful reminder of the Crusader legacy in the Mediterranean, housing a medieval museum within its thick stone walls.
