Greek sandstone columns

Metéora, Greece: Hovering between Heaven and Earth

Sky-high communities of faith

Metéora is a famous Greek landmark featuring massive sandstone columns that reach heights of 400 meters. The name refers to the floating appearance of its six active monasteries, which are built directly onto the steep rock faces. Although access originally required nerve-wracking climbs on removable ladders, today’s visitors use paths and stairs carved right into the mountainside.
