The modern village of Olympia, officially known as Archaia Olympia, is a small, quiet town in the western Peloponnese that serves as the primary gateway to the adjacent Archaeological Site of Olympia. Nestled in a lush valley at the confluence of the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers, the village features traditional architecture, tree-lined squares, and numerous hotels and tavernas catering to the hundreds of thousands of visitors who arrive each year. Beyond its role in tourism, the village remains a powerful global landmark where the Olympic flame is still lit at the Temple of Hera before beginning its journey to the host city of the modern Games.

The Old Testament connects ancient Israel to the Greek world through Javan, a descendant of Noah whose name suggests the early Ionian tribes of the Aegean. This scriptural link goes beyond mere genealogy; the prophets Daniel and Zechariah explicitly foretold the meteoric rise of the Greek Empire. Most famously, the Book of Daniel depicts Alexander the Great as a “shaggy goat” sweeping across the earth to conquer Persia, directly intertwining biblical prophecy with the emergence of Greek global power.
