The High-flying Rüppell's Vulture

Two Rüppell’s vultures on the ground.

We’ve all been there—that “hangry” stare that says you’re ready for a snack and not particularly happy about it.

But don’t let the grumpy, low-down appearance of these Rüppell's vultures (Gyps rueppelli) fool you. While they might look like they belong on the ground, they are actually the undisputed champions of the sky.

In fact, these birds hold the world record for the highest altitude ever recorded for a bird. One was confirmed soaring at a staggering 37,100 feet—that’s higher than most commercial jetliners!

Sadly, this record-breaking feat didn't end with a gold medal. Instead, the poor chap met a tragic end when he was ingested by a jet engine.

Sigh.
