The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana) is a creature of superlatives. As the largest land animal on Earth, every part of their life cycle is scaled to match their size—including the wait for a new arrival. It shouldn't surprise you that they also hold the record for the longest gestation period of any living creature: a staggering 22 months.
A Two-Year Wait for the Littlest One
For almost two full years, the herd protects the expectant mother. When the calf finally arrives, it can weigh over 200 pounds! These “little” ones are the heart of the herd, raised by a close-knit community of aunties and sisters who ensure they stay safe from predators like lions and hyenas.
