Elephants on Parade: Why they gather at the Tarangire River

Close-up of an elephant grazing near the Tarangire River, surrounded by golden savanna grass.

Big ones, small ones, fat ones, tall ones. We witnessed a parade of more than 100 elephants along the Tarangire River yesterday—a true "Yowza!" moment that reminds us why this park is the heart of Northern Tanzania birding and wildlife.

Why is Tarangire an Elephant Sanctuary?

Tarangire National Park boasts the highest density of elephants in Tanzania. The secret lies in its geography:

  • The Dry Season Refuge: From June to October, the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water source in the region.

  • The Annual Migration: Thousands of African bush elephants (Loxodonta africana) migrate here from Lake Manyara and the Maasai Steppe.

  • Massive Herds: It is common to see "super-herds" of up to 300 individuals congregating near the riverbeds and iconic baobab trees

Watching these "ecosystem engineers" is a masterclass in power and grace. Whether they are using their trunks to dig for underground water in the dry riverbed or bathing in the silty shallows, their presence is humbling.
