Pumba: Let’s Set the Record Straight

A wild African warthog known as “Pumbaa” in Swahili-inspired Disney lore. Picture from Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania.

In Swahili, the name Pumbaa literally translates to “silly,” “foolish,” or “absent-minded.”

While he’s the most famous warthog in the world, the actual Swahili word for a warthog is ngiri. Disney chose the name Pumbaa to perfectly match the character’s goofy, scatterbrained, and carefree personality.

In East African folklore, warthogs are often teased for being forgetful—for example, it’s said that they run away from a predator only to stop and forget what they were running from. The name captures that charmingly “clueless” reputation.

Uh oh. Now I guess you want to know the hidden meanings behind other names and phrases like Simba, Nala, or Hakuna Matata?
