Lilac-breasted Roller: The Most Beautiful Bird in East Africa?

Side profile of a Lilac-breasted roller perched on a branch, showcasing its vibrant 8-color plumage including lilac breast and aqua wings. I captured this image on a Tanzanian safari.

Nothing captures the vibrant spirit of an East African safari like the Lilac-breasted roller. This bird’s coloration is truly magnificent, featuring a signature lilac breast, emerald green head, earthy brown wings, and stunning aqua undersides.

Why are they called Rollers?

The Lilac-breasted roller is a true aerial acrobat. They earn their name from a spectacular courtship flight—a high-altitude dive that involves rapid rolling and pitching.

Even outside of mating season, these birds are exciting to watch. They are "perch and dive" hunters, often seen scanning the savanna from a high branch before swooping down to ambush insects on the ground.

The Art of Bird Photography

I’m still learning the art of bird photography and how to capture these feathered friends through a camera lens. A huge shout-out to Ken Gawne for his incredible help in editing this side-profile image to showcase the roller’s vivid coloration.
