The Indian Ocean: Position and Place

The Ngalawa is the traditional, double-outrigger dugout canoe of the Swahili people in Zanzibar, used for fishing, transport, and tourism on the Indian Ocean.

The Indian (or Afro-Asian) ocean

I'm thinking BIG PICTURE here about a great sea south of the Biblical Heartland.

The Indian Ocean is situated between Africa to the west, Asia to the north, and Australia to the east. It connects to the Atlantic Ocean in the southwest and the Pacific Ocean in the southeast, with the Southern Ocean bordering its southern reaches. It is the only major ocean named after a country, reflecting its historical and geographic ties to the Indian subcontinent.

Its contours are less familiar to many, but its influence is significant.

Arid and austere

The Sinai Peninsula forms a vital triangular connection between Africa and Asia, uniquely bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and the strategic Suez and Aqaba rift zones. Its diverse geography transitions from flat northern coastal plains to the expansive Tih Plateau and the rugged southern peaks of Mount Catherine, Egypt’s highest mountain. While the climate is predominantly arid, seasonal wadis dramatically carve the desert landscape, and high-altitude summits can experience surprising winter frost and snow.

A Path of Refreshment? Searching for Biblical Elim in Saudi Arabia

Hidden along the Gulf of Aqaba, the granite cliffs of Wadi Tayyib al-Ism may hold the secrets of the biblical Elim. This dramatic gorge, where towering walls meet freshwater springs, mirrors the description in Exodus 15:27 of an oasis with twelve springs and seventy palm trees. Today, explorers and historians alike visit this spectacular site to see if it truly marks the spot where the Israelites found relief in the desert.

“Four Corners,” Middle East Style

There is a unique spot on Earth where you can stand in one country and simultaneously gaze upon the shores of three others. Located at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea), the coastlines of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Israel converge in a dramatic display of geography and history.
